You never know what'll turn up at Goodwill

Julie (My Living Doll) Newmar graces the cover of Hollywood LPH-30, Rhythm and Blues in the Night (1957), one of the rarest thrift finds of my thrifting career. Or the priciest, at least--this "books" for around $400 in mint condition. My 99-cent copy isn't mint, but it's not trashed, either. It's in the middle ground between perfect and hopeless--G+. Or VG-, maybe. I got nice sound out of it, anyway.

The reason for its high book price is the anonymous inclusion of Abbey label artists like Jack Dupree, Ralph Willis and Spider Sam, Bobby Marshall, and the Ravens-style Master Keys. The Abbey material dates from 1949 and 1950--not sure where the rest of the tracks came from. Steady Roll, by the way, is the male version of My Daddy Rocks Me (with a Steady Roll).

I plan to post the entire LP before long--meanwhile, here are five of the album's uptempo blues numbers as they sound after MAGIX and I got through with them:
