Was I hoping "we'd" go to Mars? (Actually, astronauts go, and the rest of us stay here, but you know what I mean.) The answer is, yes, I was very much hoping we would. Nothing makes more sense than space exploration. However, NASA has become--like everything else--an impediment to handing buckets of money to corporations, Wall St., and corrupt military contractors. So, our space adventures have to end. That it happened under a Democratic president gives me no cause for pride.
But, moving on to lighter subjects, we have today's
Moon Winks goes back to the early 1900s--Googling gives me two or three conflicting exact dates. It's a pleasant and bland "three step" whose sheet music cover has the coolest man-in-the-moon illustration ever printed. Our recording comes from 1938. Dickie Goodman's delightfully stupid Luna Trip (1969) is the best kind of period piece, with its Walter Cronkite references and the lunar E.T. who constantly interrupts the broadcast. As someone who was "there" (i.e. watching the landing on TV), I remember the creatures-on-the-moon rumors going around at the time. Despite all the media hype to the contrary, 1969 was a very unhip time.
And, of course, you needed another recording of the Star Trek theme.
