Introducing King James
He's big, red, fuzzy, and furry, and he's ours! A former barn cat turned spoiled house cat, King James loves to eat, complain, and nap in whatever order turns up and/or occurs to him.
He's between six and seven years old. He loves his people and he's willing to tolerate his fellow felines. James brings our number up to nineteen.

Lee, your big, fuzzy, compassionate heart is showing.
My own sense is that God created our furry (and fuzzy, and even scaly) cousins to teach us through example about unrequited love, and our own responsibility to those who are dependent on us... something not as readily evident when it doesn't come on two human legs.
(And to gauge a person's soul, sometimes all it takes is to see how they respond to a hungry, homeless animal.)
Perhaps, too, these companions will also be among our advocates (or witnesses for the prosecution), come our individual judgment days: "Lord, take it easy on that poor schmuck over there. Sure, s/he had his/her jerky moments, but s/he always had a warm and welcoming lap, and never let my food bowl go empty!"
Most of us need all the advocates we can get!
