Parade of Hits a' Poppin'--6 Top Hits
Today's 45 rpm EP has a great sleeve, no? Actually, this is the 78 rpm sleeve for Parade 7802, which I doctored by adding the titles from Parade 4509 and by replacing "78 RPM" with "45 RPM." I neglected, however, to change the catalog no. to 4509, instead leaving the "78" prefix. I realize this makes no sense, but it nevertheless happened, and just as I described. I know--I was there. I think.
These budget covers, especially Sincerely and Dim, Dim the Lights, come close but not close enough. Which is what makes them so fun. It's not for lack of effort on the part of Bobby Powers and His "Hits a-Poppin" Orchestra or the Vocal Stars of Radio and Television--more like lack of budget. A lack of budget that leaves the recordings a little wanting, a little hollow sounding (or is that the digital noise filtering?). People ask me why I go out of my way to collect these things, and I quickly change the subject.
So, rush on over to Mediafire and download these half dozen top hits as performed by anonymous, union scale musicians:
Parade of Hits a' Poppin', Vol. 9
Let Me Go, Lover
Dim, Dim the Lights
Hearts of Stone
Melody of Love
No More
Sincerely
Bobby Powers and His "Hits-a-Poppin' Orchestra with Vocal Stars of Radio and Television (Parade EP 4509)

Looking forward to listen to "Dim Dim the Lights!"
I agree that these are fun to listen to. I remember having limited access to record stores until I was about ten and could make it to our version of "the big city" by way of the local bus line. I wanted a copy of the 'Shaft' soundtrack, and was delighted when I found a Pickwick recording of the film score by Soul Mann and the Brothers ('Soul' was arranger/producer Sy Mann, who was a veteran of the Benny Goodman and Alvino Rey bands, and took Dick Hyman's spot in Arthur Godfrey's house band.
After all these years I still prefer most of it to the original soundtrack. I also have a strange affinity for all those Pickwick makeovers. Thanks for offering us this gem.
Everything you said made me immediately click to download this baby! :) Thanks!
Love your blog, btw.

No, that's a 10-inch jacket. The label, however, is correct, except mine is the 45 rpm edition.
