Sunday morning gospel: Rock of Ages Quartet--Is It Far?
Dayton, Ohio's Rock of Ages Quartet consisted of members from Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee. This, unfortunately, is the only LP I've come across by this terrific group, and it's a typically complicated small label gospel LP. How so, you ask? Well, the\label has no title--just a catalog number (GR-73421, with the GR standing for "Gospel Recording," the Tennessee outfit that recorded this), and a Silver Spring, Maryland address. Meanwhile, for "records of appointments" (which I suspect should read, "records or appointments"), the back cover gives a contact address in Springboro, Ohio.
Recorded in Tennessee, sporting a label with no title and a Maryland address, and listing an Ohio address for ordering more records and/or hiring the group. Pretty par for the tiny-label-gospel course.
Superb a cappella gospel which I've featured before in full (2011) and in part (2006, 2008, and 2009). If any label experts out there can figure out the year on this, please give me a holler. I suspect the early 1970s, the time of two contemporary on-line mentions of this quartet. To the excellent gospel....
