Thanks for these tracks, Lee. I love your collections of goodies. :)
Also, I posted the 10" LP that has All Around The Christmas Tree on it if you want to check it out over at my place. I can't find where we talked about it here at your blog, maybe that was elsewhere...
Thanks! Can't wait to hear these.
Surprised to see that the Johnny Cole cuts made their way to Crown Records! I play those whenever I want to play a Christmas song that Perry Como never recorded. Glad to see Glenn's great version of Jingle Bells on this playlist as well.
Ernie,
I vaguely recall discussing that track here, but it was possibly at a post subsequently deleted by me after my hosting service of the moment 1) stopped working, or 2) banned my material. I can't keep track of that aspect of my blog's history. The Royale dub is way better than my terrible Sonora 78 pressing, though I think my rip here sounds a little better than the Royale. We can only hope that the Oberstein labels, including Varsity, used the original 78 master for their dubs, but who knows? For some reason, this uncredited dub sound a bit warmer and more detailed but not remarkably so.
Keek,
Hope you enjoy!
musicman1979,
For years, I've assumed that Johnny Cole was an alias for Johnny Kay, since both sound like a moonlighting Perry Como, but evidently they were different singers. Weird. And I'm glad to have the Glenn Miller 78, in part because it sounds better than my RCA LP version, AND it includes the ethnically-incorrect pseudo-Mexican section, which 1) to me, at least, isn't all that insulting re ethnic stereotypes, and 2) better sets up the wonderful closing passages. Thanks, all, for your comments.
Hi Lee, there is an error in the title - Albol de Navidad (Christmas Tree)--Bobby Roberts and His Orch, the correct thing is.. Arbol de Navidad, thanks for all your music, hugs from Spain and Merry Christmas
Dave from Ardmore wishes to tell you that he thinks that if ever there was a Ghost of Thrift Store Christmases Past, it's gotta be you. By the way, more organ music, please. So many great organists like Jesse Crawford and Ken Griffin recorded Christmas songs and albums. Might be worth tring to dig up (or is it out?) their efforts. In any case, thanks for your special brand of merriment. It is very much needed and appreciated now.
Anon.,
Thanks for the correction! It was titled correctly on the LP, but saw an l instead of an r...
Dave from Ardmore,
Thanks for the nice words, and organ music coming! I just ripped tracks from an excellent Ken Griffin Rondo-Lette LP (actually, Ken only got one side) which I'd ripped before but Workupload ditched. And some nice stuff by Milton Page and Curt Davis, but I couldn't locate any Jesse Crawford Xmas stuff. Either it's misplaced or I somehow never acquired any. (The former seems more probable than the latter...) Ghost of Thriftstore Christmases Past--I like that. Or, Ghost of Thrift-mas Past!
