If you want the feeling of floating, buy Super Boron!

I searched everywhere for this acetate, except in a crate of 12-inch 78s, where it's probably waiting to be found (unless it fell into an alternate dimension).  Access to the crate is limited, so I'm using a previous rip, plus a previous scan.  I had my heart set on a new rip, but these tracks are very lo-fidelity, so it probably doesn't matter.  These are Sohio/Boron radio spots for Ex-tane gas, apparently the ideal winter car fuel.  No idea on the year, but I'm guessing 1962/63.

The ads run the gamut from funny to weird (or both), and there's some unintentional humor in cut 5, a rhythmic narration in which the announcer can't quite find the proper meter--this is followed by a far more successful effort.  The henpecked husband in tracks 3 and 4 sounds familiar--anyone who recognizes this voice actor, let me know.  All I can say for sure is that it's not Wally Cox.

Help stop hubcap theft, and don't forget to buy Atlas Cushionaire Tires!  Only two days until (Julian calendar) Christmas...

Thanks for these. I put myself through college at Sohio (and Shell and Standard) pumping gas, changing oil, replacing mufflers and brakes, doing tune-ups and selling those Atlas tires, batteries and accessories.

I remember the ads, and without even listening to your rip I know the voice actor you mean. He specialized in what were then called "henpecked husbands" - "Yes, my dearest darling." Like you, I can't remember his name.

I have a Cleveland Recording acetate myself, also of ads. Can't remember the sponsor, however (Ohio Bell?). I'll have to see if I can find it.

Lee,
Thanks for these again, but what's with the volume kicking up a few seconds into the first spot? On the henpecked husband, LOL I'd recognize that voice anywhere, but I checked, just to make sure. Unless I'm mistaken (which does happen from time to time), that's Bill Thompson. Haven't listened to these all the way through, this time, but I sure will! Again, thanks, love and prayin' for ya!

Buster,

I'd love to hear that. And I think Josh nailed the voice actor--Bill Thompson. I just listened to him on a "To Tell the Truth" appearance (YouTube) doing the exact same voice. And I'm almost sure there was a cartoon character--Warner Bros.?--who had that particular sound.

Josh,

Many thanks for the voice i.d.! I totally agree--that has to be Thompson. I wonder what he got paid for his 20 second spots? And I don't know why the volume starts out so low--it's that way on the acetate. It's hard to believe Sohio would have issued something with such an obvious defect, but maybe it was a faulty dub. Not that I know much about radio station tech...!

Technology, that is...

Bill thompson was best known as the voice of "Droopy", a sad basset hound-like character created by Tex Avery at MGM Cartoon studios. Thompson also did voice overs for Hanna- Barbera (such as "Touche Turtle" from 1962.)

Thanks, Lee! My grandfather owned a Gulf Station in Tryon, NC when my dad was born. I think he sold it when they moved to Florida in 1960, after which he owned an auto parts store. Good memories.

Josh - Many thanks for the information. I am amazed that you could ID that actor!

I think Droopy is the character I remember! But I also watched "Touché Turtle," so maybe that's the source of my memory... Thanks!

Thanks, fellers, for the comments, even though this isn't my post LOL! Trion, NC, know the area, near Columbus, in the mountains of my old home state! I'm originally from the Piedmont, Greensboro, to be exact. Oh and on Bill Thompson, IMHO, it really wasn't that hard. I mostly remember him from his Fibber McGee & Molly characters, especially (in that voice) Wallace Wimple and from other shows as apparently, he did the voice of Smee (and according to his Wicki page, the other pirates) in Peter Pan and the white rabbit and dodo in Alice In Wonderland.

Oh and on tha page, there's something about his work with Union Oil, so maybe this is where these came in? Need to go lay back down, trying to kick a stomach bug, so 'til later, love and praying for y'all!

Oh, yes - Droopy! Haven't seen (or heard) him for 50 years.

Josh - You have a remarkable memory. Hope you feel better soon!

Stomach bugs are the worst, Josh--I second Buster's wish that you get well soon.

LOL, thanks, but, in the words of one of The Happy Two (ironically, I can't remember which one), never forgot a thang, if I ever did, don't 'member what it was. 'Til later, love and praying for y'all!
